Non-Rounded Spiral Wound Gaskets – Oval & Oblong Gaskets for Boiler Handholes and Manholes | Model KXT-630

Non-rounded spiral wound gaskets are custom-shaped sealing elements used on boiler handholes and manholes where a standard circular gasket cannot fit. Unlike round spiral wound gaskets, there is no universal dimensional standard for this style — every gasket is produced to the buyer's own inside dimensions, width, thickness or drawing.

Kaxite's model KXT-630 covers two shapes: oval and oblong. Both are built from a V-shaped metal winding strip combined with a soft filler (graphite, PTFE or non-asbestos), giving the gasket strong recovery and reliable sealing under the cyclic pressure and temperature changes typical of boiler handhole and manhole service.

Two Gasket Shapes for Different Boiler Openings

Oval SWG

Two different radii on the same gasket — a narrower radius at the two ends and a wider radius along the sides. Used on boiler handhole covers where the opening is longer than it is wide.

Order format: Inside A × B, width b, thickness s
Oblong SWG

Straight parallel sides with semicircular ends — essentially a circle stretched along one axis. Used on manhole covers where the opening is significantly longer than it is wide.

Order format: Inside A × B, width b, thickness s

Construction and Materials

Winding strip V-shaped preformed metal strip, wound under tension. Material options: AISI 304, AISI 316, AISI 316L, AISI 321, Monel, Inconel or as specified.
Filler Soft sealing material alternated with the winding. Options: flexible graphite, PTFE, non-asbestos fibre — selected to match the boiler fluid and temperature.
Inner / outer ring Optional. Inner ring prevents turbulence and inward buckling; outer ring gives radial location and compression stop. For non-rounded shapes these are usually supplied only when the drawing specifies them.
Gasket thickness Typically 3.2 mm, 4.5 mm or 6.4 mm — final thickness confirmed against your groove depth and bolt load.

How to Order

Because non-rounded spiral wound gaskets have no universal standard, a complete specification is required for quotation. Please provide the inside dimensions (A × B), gasket width (b), thickness (s), winding material and filler type — or simply send a drawing of the boiler opening.

ORDER EXAMPLE
SWG Oval (or oblong)
A × B × b × s
Winding: AISI 316
Filler: Graphite
Replace A × B with your actual inside dimensions, b with gasket width, s with thickness. Attach a drawing if you have one — we will confirm feasibility before quoting.

Typical Applications

Boiler handhole covers Access openings on industrial and utility boilers for inspection and cleaning.
Boiler manhole covers Larger oval or oblong openings for personnel entry during maintenance.
Pressure vessels Non-circular inspection ports on vessels handling steam, hot water or process fluids.
Heat exchangers Non-standard cover plates where a round gasket will not fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is a non-rounded spiral wound gasket?
A non-rounded spiral wound gasket is a spiral wound gasket produced in an oval or oblong shape instead of a circle. It is used on boiler handholes, manholes and other non-circular openings where a standard round gasket cannot fit.
Q2: Is there a standard size for oval or oblong spiral wound gaskets?
No. There is no universal dimensional standard for this style. Each gasket is produced to the customer's own inside dimensions (A × B), gasket width (b), thickness (s) or a supplied drawing.
Q3: What information do I need to provide when ordering?
Please provide: inside dimensions A × B, gasket width b, thickness s, winding material (e.g. AISI 316), filler type (e.g. graphite) and quantity. A drawing or sketch is preferred — we can work from a hand sketch if CAD is not available.
Q4: What winding and filler materials are available?
Winding: AISI 304, AISI 316, AISI 316L, AISI 321, Monel, Inconel and other alloys on request. Filler: flexible graphite, PTFE, non-asbestos fibre — selected based on your boiler fluid and operating temperature.
Q5: What is the typical lead time?
Because each gasket is custom-made, typical production time is 7–12 working days after drawing confirmation, depending on quantity and material. Express shipping is available for urgent shutdown work.
