Available in soft iron, low carbon steel, 304/304L, 316/316L, 321, 347, 410, 5Cr-0.5Mo, copper, aluminum, Inconel 600, Incoloy 825, Monel 400, Titanium, Nickel 200, Hastelloy B2 and C276. Single use — do not reuse. Free sample, OEM/ODM, wholesale pricing.

Product Detail

BX Ring Joint Gasket – Pressure-Energized Metal Seal for 6BX Flanges, 5,000 to 20,000 psi Service | Model KXT 830

BX Ring Joint Gasket (Model KXT 830) is a metal sealing ring with a BX-shaped cross-section, machined to fit only 6BX flanges. It is a radial pressure-energized seal — one specific variant of the octagonal metal ring gasket family. The gasket makes contact with both the inner and outer ring joint faces, and as the connection bolts are tightened the sealing surfaces are pressed tightly together to establish the initial seal.

When internal media pressure rises, the BX ring joint gasket expands radially under pressure and presses even more tightly against the bevel face of the ring joint groove, forming a self-tightening effect. This makes BX rings the correct choice for high-pressure wellhead, Christmas tree and manifold connections in the 5,000 psi to 20,000 psi range.

How the BX Ring Joint Gasket Seals – Radial Pressure Energizing

STEP 1 · BEFORE PRESSURIZATION
Bolt load creates initial seal

As the flange bolts are tightened, the BX ring is compressed in the axial direction. Its upper and lower surfaces contact the ring joint grooves and deform plastically to make the initial seal line.

STEP 2 · AFTER PRESSURIZATION
Media pressure reinforces the seal

As internal pressure rises, the BX ring expands radially outward and presses harder against the bevel face of the ring joint groove — the seal actually tightens as pressure increases. This is why BX is described as a radial pressure-energized gasket.

IMPORTANT LIMIT

Rising media pressure deforms the flange and the connecting bolts, which can cause the sealing surfaces to separate slightly and reduce the sealing ratio. Because the plastic deformation of the BX ring cannot be reversed, BX ring joint gaskets must not be reused after the joint has been opened.

Available Materials and Hardness

When the octagonal type is chosen, the material hardness of the gasket should be 15 to 20 HB lower than the hardness of the flange face. The table below lists the standard metals, their maximum hardness and their usable temperature range for the BX Ring Joint Gasket.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is a BX Ring Joint Gasket?
A BX Ring Joint Gasket is a metal sealing ring with a BX-shaped cross-section. It is a radial pressure-energized seal — one specific variant of the octagonal metal ring gasket family — and it fits only 6BX flanges.
Q2: What pressure range is the BX Ring Joint Gasket rated for?
The BX Ring Joint Gasket is designed for higher pressure ratings, starting at 5,000 psi and going up to 20,000 psi. It is commonly used on wellheads, Christmas trees and high-pressure manifolds.
Q3: How does a BX Ring Joint Gasket seal?
The BX ring is compressed axially when the bolts are tightened, making initial contact with the ring joint grooves. As internal pressure rises, the ring expands radially and presses more tightly against the bevel face of the groove — the seal is reinforced by pressure, not weakened by it.
Q4: Can a BX Ring Joint Gasket be reused?
No. The BX ring undergoes plastic deformation to form the seal. Once the joint has been opened, the gasket must be replaced — reusing a used BX ring will not produce a reliable seal.
Q5: What materials are available for the BX Ring Joint Gasket?
Soft iron, low carbon steel, 304/304L, 316/316L, 321, 347, 410, 5Cr-0.5Mo, copper, aluminum, Inconel 600, Incoloy 825, Monel 400, Titanium, Nickel 200, Hastelloy B2 and Hastelloy C276. The material hardness should be 15–20 HB lower than the flange face hardness.
